Dr. Leonard Malasa, (MD, PGD) is the founder and serves as the CEO of Tanzania Better Health. He is a medical doctor with experience in the healthcare industry for more than ten years. He started medical career after joining clinical medicine training course in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania where he also engaged in community health outreach programs under the mentorship of Dr. Coles, Dr. Mackey and Dr. Saitore. Malasa later acquired his Doctor of Medicine degree from Hubert Kairuki Memorial University in Tanzania. He also has a training background in project monitoring and evaluation. Some of other trainings underwent includes medical genetics and genomics at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. Malasa has worked across the levels of healthcare in his home country, from primary healthcare in rural settings to national referral hospital facilities with involvement in clinical work, public health activities as well as participating in research and teaching medical students. Currently he works as an Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at Hubert Kairuki Memorial University. Throughout his career journey Malasa has been particularly motivated and passionate about medical education as well as serving the community.
VICTORIA B. KARIATHI
Director of Administration
Ms. Victoria Kariathi, (BSc, MSc) is the Director of Administration at Tanzania Better Health. She has worked with the government for the past eight years under the ministry of agriculture as well as the ministry of health. Currently she is a research officer in nutrition training at Tanzania Food and Nutrition Centre. She looks forward to strengthening community health through healthy eating and lifestyle behaviors. Victoria acquired a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics and Human Nutrition at Sokoine University of Agriculture in 2010. In 2017 she obtained a Masters in Life Sciences and Bioengineering specialized in food and nutrition sciences at Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology. She has experience in working with nutrition and agriculture projects. She has authored research papers in the areas of food toxicology, nutrition, health and agriculture. She is now working in the projects related to adolescent nutrition and diet related non communicable diseases.
OCTAVIAN C. MSONGAMWANJA
Director of Planning and Marketing
Mr. Octavian Msongamwanja, (BA, MBA) is a Co-founder of Tanzania Better Health and serves as the Director of Planning and Marketing. He has over ten years’ experience in working with both international and local developmental organizations in East Africa and the United States. He has vast experiences in microfinance, business development, rural development, and agribusiness. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Community Development from Daystar University located in Nairobi, Kenya, and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from Oral Roberts University located in Tulsa, Oklahoma in the United States. He finds fulfillment in helping others run and operate profitable businesses. Octavian believes that a community with better health will ultimately have a better economy.
BEATA N. MUSHEMA
Director of Programs and Operations
Dr. Beata Mushema, (MD, MSc) is a Co-founder and serves as the Director of Programs and Operations at Tanzania Better Health. She is a general practitioner with special interests in reproductive, maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health (RMNCAH), health education, and civic engagement. She has a training background in project management, monitoring and evaluation in health, focusing on designing and implementation of evaluation of health interventions, data management and analysis, implementation, science, change management, applied Monitoring and Evaluation, Health Management Information Systems and Strategic Planning. She has notable experience in organizing and participating in a number of professional and community projects including capacity building of health care workers from several public and private health facilities in emergency care for victims of all ages particularly children and infants; mass health screening campaigns for communities in and around Dar es Salaam; and organizing professional conferences and gatherings within the scientific community. Currently, Dr. Mushema works at a private medical university in the department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology where she is involved in teaching activities, improvement and instructional strategies and quality assurance.
PATRICK MAGEHEMA
Director of Finance
Mr. Patrick Magehema, (CPA) is a Co-founder and serves as a Director of Finance of Tanzania Better Health.He is a senior Accountant in public sector with more than 11years’ experience in offering accounting profession services and compliance with international accounting standards, He is also a member of National Board of Accountants and Auditors (NBAA). He has considerable experience in the banking industry as well.He has developed a cutting edge in easily supporting the organization by assisting to produce accurate financial and management accounting information on which financial decisions are based. Such as preparation of operating budgets, financial analysis/planning, financial statement and reporting, accounting policies and procedure, taxes, cash flow, and auditing of which organization processes enhanced on providing adequate community services at large.
